Stop Fooling yourself With Finger Swatches
You will notice that I use finger swatches, its the norm across beauty blogs and if I didn't use them you would wonder why products don't look the same for me as they do everyone else. So to make things easy I use them.
I need to demonstrate you what you are looking at though as I don't want anyone to feel deceived.
Finger swatches pick up a lot more product than you would ever load on to you brush and are laid down with significantly more pressure. This is going to make a big difference to the look of the eye shadow.
Below I have some examples showing you the difference. All of these have been laid down on top of the Smashbox 24 Hour eyeshadow primer. The first swatch is a finger swatch, the second with a flat shader brush and the last with a MAC 224 blending brush.
The first shadows I tried were shimmer shades from a Number 7 palette and the Urban Decay Naked Original palette.
The Urban Decay shadows fared better than the Number 7 but you can still see a massive difference between the finger swatch and even the swatch with the flat shader brush. When using the flat shader I did 3 swipes which is roughly what I would do on my eyes.
The I thought I wonder how matte shadows will fare so I tried the Stila In the Know palette and The Balm Meet Matte Nude palette.
I tried to choose similar shades across both palettes so you could see the effect across different brands.
I think the matte palettes did better than the shimmers but there is still a big difference.
I just want you to think about this when you watch swatch videos online or you swatch things yourself in store. To an extent you are deceiving yourself the colour you see on the swatch is not going to be the same as you see on your eye without an awful lot of work.
